Harnessing Institutional Memory: Why Adokiye Tombomieye is Vital for the Renewed Hope Agenda
The success of any administration lies not just in the brilliance of its policies, but in the caliber of the hands tasked with their execution. As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, continues to refine the machinery of state to deliver on the Renewed Hope Agenda, the focus must increasingly turn toward individuals who possess a rare blend of deep technical expertise, unblemished integrity, and a mastery of the Nigerian bureaucratic landscape.
Among the names currently echoing within the circles of civil society and industry experts is Engr. Adokiye Tombomieye, OON, FNSE.
The recent call by the Coalition of Registered Civil Society Organizations in Nigeria for his inclusion in the administration is not merely a political suggestion; it is a strategic recommendation rooted in the urgent needs of our national economy, particularly within the energy and administrative sectors.
Engr. Tombomieye’s career at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited is a masterclass in professional longevity and excellence. Spanning over three decades, his journey through the ranks to become the Executive Vice President (Upstream) provides him with an “insider-out” perspective on Nigeria’s primary revenue artery.
In an era where public service is often shadowed by allegations of misconduct, Tombomieye’s record remains remarkably clean.
For a President who has made transparency and accountability a cornerstone of his reforms, appointing a man known for a “zero-tolerance for corruption” is a move that would reinforce public and investor confidence.
The Upstream sector is the lifeblood of the Nigerian economy, yet it faces monumental challenges—from oil theft and aging infrastructure to the complexities of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) implementation. Tombomieye’s experience at the highest levels of NNPCL means he does not require a “learning curve.” He understands the technicalities of production and the administrative bottlenecks that often hinder progress.
Beyond the oil and gas sector, his background as a seasoned administrator makes him a versatile asset.
The Renewed Hope Agenda requires “engineers” of progress—individuals who can take high-level visions and dismantle the logistical hurdles preventing their realization.
Aligning with the Renewed Hope Vision
President Tinubu’s vision for Nigeria is bold, requiring a shift from “business as usual” to a results-oriented governance model. To achieve this, the administration needs:
To avoid the pitfalls of the past while innovating for the future.
To ensure that national resources are managed with the highest ethical standards.
To breathe new life into existing agencies and parastatals.
Engr. Tombomieye embodies these traits. As a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE) and a recipient of the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), his contributions have already been recognized at the highest levels of professional and national honors.
The appeal by the Coalition of Registered Civil Society Organizations, led by Comrade Prince Joel Samoh, highlights a growing consensus: the President should “look inward” and tap into the reservoir of talent that has already served the nation meritoriously because in the delicate task of nation-building, there is no substitute for experience.
By bringing Engr. Adokiye Tombomieye into the fold, President Tinubu would be securing a seasoned hand capable of navigating the complexities of the current economic climate.
It is a choice for stability, a choice for integrity, and ultimately, a choice for the success of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Comrade PRINCE JOEL SAMOH.
Convener.
COALITION OF REGISTERED CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATION IN NIGERIA.
