THE National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Nigeria Police Force have renewed their commitment tom bolstering the existing synergy between both agencies to enhance the security of corps members nationwide.
The Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier-General Olakunle Nafiu, stated this during a courtesy visit to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Olatunji Disu, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
This was contained in a statement released by the Director, Information and Public Relations, NYSC Caroline Embu and made available to journalist.
The statement further stated that While congratulating the IGP on his appointment, Gen. Nafiu commended him on the recent inauguration of his special investigative team. The DG noted that the Police have been instrumental to the success of NYSC activities and programmes since the scheme’s inception.
Gen. Nafiu appealed to the Police leadership for maximum protection of corps members and NYSC staff, both within and outside orientation camps. He specifically requested heightened security for corps members and their properties, including corps lodges, as the nation prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Furthermore, the DG highlighted that the NYSC Act stipulates that members of the Armed Forces and paramilitary agencies are exempted from mandatory national service.
Consequently, he sought to interface with the management of the Nigeria Police Academy to facilitate the issuance of Certificates of Exemption to graduates of the institution, in line with statutory requirements.
In his response, the IGP assured the DG that the Police would continue to prioritise the security of the scheme. He confirmed that the Force has documented the locations of all corps lodges to ensure timely intervention whenever the need arises.
Regarding the issuance of exemption certificates for Police Academy graduates, the IGP welcomed the development and assured the NYSC leadership of the Force’s continued cooperation.
