Zamfara: PDP Assembly Candidate Kurya Defects to APC, Cites Security Failures in the state.
By Comfort Chukwukelue
In a major political realignment in Zamfara State, Hon. Muhammad Lawal Kuryar Madaro, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the Kaura Namoda South State Constituency election, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Kurya announced his defection on Saturday during a well-attended event organised by Hon. Yazeed Shehu Danfulani Projects at the Taula Arena in Gusau.
The former PDP candidate’s decision comes months after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared APC’s Kamilu Sa’idu winner of the August supplementary election for the Kaura Namoda South constituency.
According to Returning Officer Lawal Sa’adu of the Federal University, Gusau, Sa’idu polled 1,181 votes against Kurya’s 194 in the runoff. Overall, the APC garnered 8,182 votes compared to the PDP’s 5,544
Kurya, was reportedly supported by Governor Dauda Lawal during the election
He accused the Lawal administration of losing focus, particularly on tackling insecurity in Zamfara, which he blamed for his electoral loss.
“I can no longer remain in a party that has failed to protect the lives and property of our people,” Kurya said, while calling on his supporters to rally behind the APC and its leader in the state, Dr. Bello Matawalle, Minister of State for Defence.
Kurya expressed optimism that under the APC, Zamfara would witness renewed peace and development.
His defection is seen as a significant development ahead of future political contests in the state, where security concerns and inter-party rivalries continue to shape the political landscape.
