The Network of Women with Disabilities has achieved a landmark victory in the fight against disability-based discrimination with the reinstatement of Aisha Aminu to her former position at the Federal medical Center, Bida, Niger State.
According to a press release signed by the executive director network of women with disability Loise Auta, Aisha’s dismissal, originally motivated by discriminatory attitudes towards her disability, sparked a high-profile campaign that has now culminated in her return to work.
Loise said, Aisha Aminu’s case highlighted the severe injustices faced by women with disabilities when her initial termination was clearly rooted in bias against her disability—a gross infringement of her human rights.
Explaining the effort of the network to achieving this stride, loise said, In response to Amina’s dismissal, the Network of Women with Disabilities, in collaboration with various advocacy groups, launched a comprehensive campaign to overturn this decision. Their efforts included issuing a press release, organizing a press conference with demonstrative support, and escalating the issue to key legal and governmental entities including the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria and the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs.
Further advocacy included persistent lobbying of the Chief Medical Director (CMD) and a formal courtesy visit to the Armed Forces, all aimed at amplifying the demand for Aminu’s reinstatement. These actions were supported by widespread public backing, legal interventions, and a sustained pressure campaign.
The Director said, the successful reinstatement of Aminu marks a significant stride towards greater inclusivity and equal rights for individuals with disabilities. She emphasized the broader impact of this victory, stating, “This achievement is not only for Aisha Aminu but for every woman with a disability confronting systemic barriers. It underscores our commitment to fighting against exclusion and discrimination, ensuring that everyone is evaluated based on their skills and potential rather than their physical limitations,” she added
“This development serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusive practices and the ongoing need for reforms that safeguard the rights of individuals with disabilities,” she also said
The Network of Women with Disabilities extended its gratitude to all supporters, legal professionals, and advocates who contributed to this successful outcome, marking a pivotal moment in the movement for disability rights.
