In a bold move to transform the beleaguered sports sector, the House Committee on Sports convened its inaugural meeting, emphasizing a renewed commitment to revitalizing sports in Nigeria.
Chairman Honourable Kabiru Amadu acknowledged the current challenges facing the nation’s sports, vowing to implement a strategic overhaul aimed at achieving optimal performance.
“We have a big task ahead of us to reposition this Committee,” he stated, highlighting the urgent need for systemic change.
Amadu pointed out that sports can significantly contribute to reducing crime and unemployment while generating substantial foreign exchange. However, he lamented that of Nigeria’s over 40 sports federations, fewer than 20 are operational, with only five receiving adequate funding.
Addressing the recent disappointment of Nigeria’s failure to secure any medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Amadu pledged to tackle the underlying issues that have plagued the sector.
“We will engage with the appropriate authorities to identify and resolve the challenges facing our federations,” he affirmed, underscoring the need for a focused approach to support the nation’s youth and athletes,” he said.
The Chairman also expressed concern over the deteriorating sports infrastructure, particularly the national stadia, calling for immediate budgetary allocations to address these critical issues. He proposed a sustainable development plan encompassing grassroots programs, training facilities, comprehensive medical support, and strategic player rotations to foster football and other sports across the country.
In closing, Amadu extended his gratitude to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Honourable Tajudeen Abass, for the opportunity to lead the committee, while also honoring the late Hon. Ekene Abubakar Adams for his dedication in steering the committee successfully.
As the committee prepares to engage stakeholders, it aims to reposition Nigerian sports on a global stage, signaling a new era of hope and progress for athletes and sports enthusiasts alike.
