
Reps mourns Deputy Chief Whip

The House of Representatives has announced the death of Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, the Deputy Chief Whip, who passed away earlier today after a brief illness. Onanuga, who represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, was a committed lawmaker and a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political landscape.Born on December 2, 1965, Onanuga began her legislative career in 2019 when she was elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). During her first term in the 9th Assembly, she served as Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, where she spearheaded initiatives aimed at empowering women and improving social welfare policies across the country.In 2023, Onanuga was re-elected to the 10th Assembly and appointed as Deputy Chief Whip, a position she held until her passing. Known for her discipline, intellect, and passion, she earned the nickname ‘ Ijaya’ among her colleagues, reflecting her determination and commitment to legislative excellence. Her contributions to parliamentary proceedings and her advocacy for the welfare of her constituents left a lasting impact.The House of Representatives, in a statement signed by its spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., described Onanuga as a visionary leader and a tireless advocate for her constituency.
