
NIN Now Mandatory for Accessing Social Services in Nigeria, Says SGF

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume has said, the National Identification Number (NIN) has become a crucial requirement for Nigerians to access social services, according to . The SGF made this declaration while inaugurating an Inter-Ministerial retreat on the Nigeria Digital Identification for Development (ID4D) Project in Lagos.
In a press statement by Head, Corporate Communications Unit, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Kayode Adegoke (PhD, senator Akume emphasized that the poor and vulnerable populations will need the NIN to benefit from palliatives, highlighting the importance of digital identity in driving socio-economic development.
“Providing digital identity for all Nigerians is a cardinal focus of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration,” he said.
The SGF urged all government agencies to support the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in establishing a robust and inclusive national identity system. He commended the NIMC Director-General, Engr. (Dr.) Abisoye Coker-Odusote, for her dedication to fulfilling the Commission’s mandate.
The Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Tanko Sununu, also reiterated his Ministry’s collaboration with NIMC to ensure that the NIN is used to access social services and palliatives.
Engr. Coker-Odusote expressed gratitude to the SGF and the Minister, assuring that the NIMC is ready to deliver on its mandate.
“We are confident that with sustained inter-agency collaboration and support from all critical stakeholders, we will fast-track our mission to reposition the national identity system,” she said.
