Nigeria’s Hydropower potentials.
Current Reality vs. Untapped Potential.
Maurice Dugeri
Installed today: About 2,400MW from Kainji, Jebba, Shiroro & Zungeru. There is also Mabon and Kashimbilla Dam of 40MW each.
Untapped potential: 14,000-24,000MW large-scale and small hydro.
That’s 80-85% of hydro energy waiting to be unlocked!
Installed capacity is only a fraction of potential:
Despite having the potential for 14,000-24,000MW or more, only around 2.1-2.4GW has been developed so far…about 15-20% of estimated hydro potential that’s feasible today.
Examples of identified large hydro potential sites:
*Mambilla Plateau (very large potential of about 3GW (3000MW))
Power Technology.
*Lokoja, Onitsha, Makurdi, Katsina-Ala, Ikom and Gurara river sites identified for possible hydro development from the sector studies and data.
Imagine the clean energy, jobs, and grid stability we could gain.
Nigeria’s rivers aren’t just flowing; they’re power waiting to happen.
Strategic investments in hydro could drastically boost Nigeria’s renewable energy mix. Do the maths with the current nation’s energy needs.
Bottom line: We have the water, the sites, and the potential; just unlock Nigeria’s hydro future!
