National Assembly Committed to Oversight – Deputy Senate President
By Comfort Chukwukelue
The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has reaffirmed the National Assembly’s dedication to legislative oversight, describing it as the cornerstone of democratic governance.
Speaking on Monday at the 7th annual Senator Abiola Ajimobi Roundtable and the 75th posthumous birthday of the late former governor of Oyo State, held at the University of Ibadan, Senator Jibrin emphasized the importance of oversight in ensuring transparency, accountability, and prudent use of public funds.
The roundtable, organized by the Senator Abiola Ajimobi Foundation (SAAF) in collaboration with the Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ibadan, was themed “Legislative Oversight in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospects.”
“The role of legislative oversight in a democratic society cannot be overemphasized because it ensures accountability, transparency, and the much-needed checks and balances that enhance the effective use of public funds,” he said.
As the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Senator Jibrin highlighted the legislature’s role as the government’s watchdog, holding the executive accountable and ensuring that public interests are prioritized. He underscored the Assembly’s authority to investigate government activities, evaluate policies, and monitor program implementations tied to appropriated funds.
Reflecting on the theme of the event, the Deputy Senate President reiterated the 10th Assembly’s commitment to its oversight functions while inviting constructive criticism of its activities.
“We welcome dialogue on issues of national importance and the challenges of legislative oversight. I assure Nigerians that the 10th Assembly remains steadfast in its responsibilities,” he stated in a message issued by his media aide, Alhaji Ismail Mudashir.
Responding to questions from discussants at the event, Senator Jibrin explained the decision to name the National Assembly Library after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“This is the first time in history that a former senator has become president of this country. President Tinubu and his wife, who was also a senator, share a unique connection with the National Assembly. Naming the library after him honors this historic achievement,” he explained.
Updates on Refinery Operations
Addressing Nigeria’s refining capacity, Senator Jibrin disclosed that the Port Harcourt Refinery had resumed operations, while the Warri Refinery was set to follow suit. He emphasized the Assembly’s oversight efforts to ensure effective use of funds allocated to the refineries.
“Port Harcourt Refinery is operational, and Warri Refinery will soon begin production. Those doubting this can visit the facilities themselves,” he added.
He also lauded the Dangote Refinery project, describing it as a significant achievement and an example of Nigerian innovation and ambition.
Power Supply Challenges
On the issue of power supply, Senator Jibrin described it as a work in progress but assured that the current government had developed strategies to address the persistent challenges.
“Previous governments have done their best, and this administration is designing solutions to ensure an adequate power supply. Efforts are ongoing to stimulate the economy through reliable electricity,” he stated.
The Deputy Senate President commended the SAAF for continuing the legacy of Senator Ajimobi through the annual roundtable, noting the relevance of the chosen topic in shaping Nigeria’s governance.
