Grace Ike Rallies for Press Freedom and Workers’ Rights in Stirring May Day Message
By Comfort Chukwukelue
As the world commemorates International Workers’ Day, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has delivered a passionate tribute to Nigerian workers—especially journalists—urging for greater press freedom and improved working conditions in the face of growing economic hardship.
In a message that resonated with the 2024 theme, “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship,” Ike didn’t mince words. She acknowledged the resilience of workers across the country and spotlighted the struggles many continue to endure—rising living costs, job insecurity, and shrinking civic space.
“Workers’ Day is more than just a celebration of labour,” she said. “It’s a powerful reminder to defend the civic space — where truth is protected, rights are upheld, and every voice is heard.”
The NUJ FCT Chair emphasized the critical role journalists play in safeguarding democracy, especially during trying times. She pointed out that as economic pressures mount, the voices of the people—and those who amplify them—must not be stifled.
“In these challenging times, the media must not be silenced. We are the watchdogs, the truth-tellers, and the advocates for the voiceless,” she declared. “We must resist censorship, demand fair treatment, and protect the freedom of the press at all costs.”
Ike called for collective responsibility, urging government bodies, private employers, and civil society to rise to the occasion and provide supportive, dignified working environments.
“Let’s not allow hardship to strip us of our rights,” she warned. “Instead, let our shared struggles drive us to build a Nigeria where every worker can thrive.”
As the first woman to lead the NUJ FCT Council, Ike’s words carried both historical significance and a clear call to action.
“On this Workers’ Day, I urge leaders at every level — support us, empower us, and stand with us,” she said. “Only then can we turn the sacrifices of our workers into lasting progress for our nation.”
