The House of Representatives has said it will stop at nothing expose corrupt practices and reinforcing accountability within the public sector.
Speaking at the investigative hearing on the claims made by popular Nigerian figure Okuneye Idris Olarenwaju, also known as Bobrisky, regarding misconduct within the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Correctional Service ( NCS), Rep. Ginger Onwusibi, said his committee is set to rid the public sector of practices undermining rule of law.
During his testimony, Mr. Olarenwaju alleged that while incarcerated, he received preferential treatment, including separate accommodations, due to financial inducements paid to Correctional Service personnel. Additionally, claims surfaced that EFCC operatives solicited bribes amounting to ₦15 million for leniency in his case, while an alleged ₦10 million was offered to facilitate his release through presidential pardon.
Chairman Onwusibe expressed the gravity of these allegations, stating, “These claims not only tarnish the image of our key national agencies but also pose a serious threat to our democratic values.” He emphasized the necessity for a comprehensive investigation to uphold the integrity of public institutions and restore public trust.
He said, the committee’s focus will be on exposing corrupt practices and reinforcing accountability within the public sector, which is essential for maintaining national stability and fostering economic growth. Onwusibe called for an unwavering commitment to transparency and integrity throughout the investigation process, stating, “We must confront these issues with zero tolerance for corruption.”
He also said, that as the committee prepares to delve deeper into the allegations, the implications for the EFCC and Nigerian Correctional Service could be profound, highlighting the urgent need for reform in the face of systemic challenges. The proceedings are expected to provide critical insights into the operational integrity of these institutions and promote a culture of professionalism moving forward.
Onwusibe further highlighted that, the House of Representatives, under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Abass Tajudeen, is determined to implement best practices and ensure that justice prevails in this high-stakes inquiry, as it seeks to uphold the principles of democracy and good governance in Nigeria.
As the investigation unfolds, the nation watches closely, hopeful for a resolution that addresses the issues at hand and restores faith in its public institutions.
