As Nigeria marks 64 years of independence as a nation, a non governmental organization ActionAid Nigeria has called on President Bola Tinubu, to move beyond empty promises and implement realistic economic and social reforms in light of the severe challenges facing millions of Nigerians.
In a press statement by the country director of Actionaid Nigeria, Andrew Mamedu, and made available to journalist, the organization expressed deep concern over the President’s recent Independence Day speech, which failed to address the escalating crises of inflation, unemployment, and insecurity.
Andrew highlighted that despite the administration’s claims of progress, the reality for many Nigerians is a worsening struggle to afford basic necessities. “The removal of fuel subsidies and rising energy costs have compounded the financial burdens on families already grappling with skyrocketing food prices and economic instability.
ActionAid Nigeria criticized the government’s approach, comparing it to past administrations that failed to deliver on their promises, and called for immediate action to alleviate the suffering of citizens.
“While the government asks for sacrifice, how long must Nigerians endure this pain?” He emphasized that the current policies have only deepened poverty and inequality, leaving citizens feeling unheard and unsupported.
The organization also condemned the lack of action regarding ongoing banditry in the Northwest, noting the President’s omission of this critical issue in his speech. ActionAid called for urgent measures to provide security and protection to vulnerable communities suffering from violence and displacement.
Furthermore, with the government planning a youth conference to engage young Nigerians, ActionAid insisted that it should be an inclusive platform that represents all voices, not just politically affiliated groups. The group reiterated the need for the unconditional release of detained protesters, calling for genuine dialogue that leads to meaningful change.
As protests and public discontent continue to rise, ActionAid Nigeria demands that the government listens to the people’s needs and implements reforms that reflect their realities. “Nigerians are tired of empty promises. We need tangible changes that will lead to improved living standards, security, and justice,” Mamedu concluded.
In solidarity with the citizens, ActionAid Nigeria remains committed to advocating for reforms that promote equity, inclusivity, and sustainable governance in Nigeria.
