BREAKING NEWS: U.S. Embassy in Abuja Suspends Visa Appointments Amid Protest Fears
By Comfort Chukwukelue
The United States Embassy in Abuja has suspended all visa appointments in Nigeria’s capital, citing security concerns linked to anticipated protests in the city.
In a notice issued to applicants, the Embassy stated that the temporary suspension affects both immigrant and non-immigrant visa appointments scheduled at its Abuja facility. The mission explained that the decision was taken out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of applicants and staff.
Applicants who had existing appointments have been advised to await further communication regarding rescheduling procedures. The Embassy did not immediately provide a timeline for when regular visa services would resume.
Security has been heightened in parts of Abuja following calls for demonstrations by various groups, prompting diplomatic missions and other institutions to reassess operations. While routine consular services at the Embassy’s Lagos Consulate were not immediately mentioned in the notice, affected applicants in Abuja have been urged to monitor official channels for updates.
Further developments are expected as authorities continue to assess the security situation in the Federal Capital Territory.
