The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched Safe Wheel Magazine, a new public education platform aimed at strengthening road safety awareness and reducing traffic crashes and fatalities across Nigeria, as the country approaches the peak Christmas and New Year travel season.
The publication was unveiled on Thursday at the FRSC Sector Command Headquarters in Abuja during a stakeholders’ forum themed “Renewed Hope for Safer Roads: Driving Safety and Logistics as Catalyst for Economic Development.” The event drew participants from federal ministries and agencies, transport unions, security services, education regulators, technology firms, civil society organisations and development partners.
Speaking at the launch, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, described road safety as central to Nigeria’s economic growth, noting that mobility underpins the bulk of the nation’s commercial activity.
“Mobility drives almost 80 per cent of Nigeria’s economic movement. For Nigeria to grow, the safety of every journey must reflect our collective aspirations for national development,” he said.
Mohammed said Safe Wheel Magazine would serve as the cornerstone of a renewed national education strategy, designed to bring safety knowledge, innovation and responsible mobility directly to the public. He added that the initiative marked a significant milestone in the Corps’ public engagement efforts after more than two decades.
With increased travel expected during the festive period, the Corps Marshal announced expanded nationwide operations, including intensified patrols, enhanced personnel training, improved intelligence reviews and stronger logistics support to curb road crashes.
He also highlighted recent FRSC outreach programmes, including free medical missions for drivers at motor parks, and praised the Corps’ sports ambassadors, the Safety Shooters and Safety Babes, describing them as symbols of morale, wellness and national pride.
In his remarks, the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, said the launch of the magazine signalled the revival of a safety communication tradition that had waned over the years.
“Today, we ignite a national movement for safer roads and a more enlightened public,” he said, crediting the current leadership for restoring FRSC’s visibility and impact in public safety education.
Ogungbemide listed key institutional partners backing the initiative, including the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), the Nigerian Customs Service, Galaxy Backbone, major transport unions and technology partners. He described Safe Wheel as an advocacy platform, technical resource and behavioural change tool that would also document the often-unseen efforts of the Corps.
Other speakers at the event underscored the importance of community-based education, global road safety commitments and early engagement of children on discipline and safety consciousness.
The launch, formally performed by the chairman of the occasion, High Chief Dr Toe Ekechi, was widely regarded by participants as a fresh chapter in Nigeria’s road safety campaign.
As festive travel draws near, the FRSC reiterated its call for collective responsibility on the roads, stressing that safer journeys are critical to national wellbeing and economic stability. The Corps said Safe Wheel Magazine would serve as a practical guide for drivers and road users, reinforcing the message that road safety remains everyone’s responsibility.
