The House Committee on Sports has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the significant increase in the 2025 budget allocation for sports, which has risen from N29 billion in 2024 to over N94 billion. This 227% increment was highlighted on Tuesday during the budget defense session at the National Assembly, Abuja, involving the National Sports Commission (NSC), the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and the National Institute for Sports (NIS).
Chairman of the Committee, Honourable Kabiru Amadu, described the budgetary boost as a pivotal development for the sports sector. He remarked, “The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has tripled the budget for sports from N29 billion in 2024 to N94 billion in 2025. This leap represents a 227% increment and underscores President Tinubu’s commitment to advancing sports in Nigeria.”
Amadu, who represents Gusau/Tsafe Federal Constituency, expressed optimism that the increased funding would address challenges such as decaying sports infrastructure, insufficient funds for over 40 federations, and the lack of sustainable development plans. He also highlighted the importance of training and manpower development to enhance Nigeria’s performance in global sports.
The Chairman expressed hope that the newly appointed Super Eagles coach would lead the national team to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He emphasized that the coach’s selection was based on his impressive track record and that the increased budget would ensure all necessary resources are provided to achieve this goal. “We believe the new appointment, backed by this expanded funding, will help realize Nigeria’s dream of returning to the world stage in 2026,” Amadu stated.
Amadu assured the NSC, NFF, and NIS of the National Assembly’s unwavering support in ensuring the timely and efficient release of funds from the federal government. He emphasized that collaboration between the legislative and executive arms of government is crucial for grassroots sports development and national progress.
The Committee urged the sports agencies to justify the confidence reposed in them by President Tinubu and Nigerians. Amadu stressed the need for strategic deployment of the 2025 allocations to bring tangible results in infrastructure, administration, and sports performance.
This budget increment, coupled with the new leadership in the national team, is viewed as a bold step towards revitalizing sports in Nigeria, addressing systemic issues, and elevating the country’s standing in international competitions.
