
Nigeria Moves Closer to Independent Candidacy as House Advances Landmark Bill

The House of Representatives has taken a significant step toward expanding political participation in Nigeria by advancing the Independent Candidacy Bill, which has been referred to the Special Ad-hoc Committee on Constitution Review for further consideration. Sponsored by Hon. Akin Rotimi, the bill aims to allow citizens to run for public office independently, marking a pivotal moment for the nation’s democracy.
In a session held on Thursday, October 17, 2024, the bill was reintroduced following its First Reading on September 26. Hon. Rotimi emphasized the bill’s potential to foster greater inclusivity in the political landscape. “This legislative action is crucial for the evolution of our democracy,” he stated, highlighting the constitutional significance of independent candidacies.
The House’s commitment to a thorough legislative process is underscored by its adherence to specific Standing Orders. combined provisions of Order 12, Rule 17, and Order One, Rule 1(2), of the House of Representatives Standing Orders.
As the bill progresses, Rep. Rotimi expressed optimism that its passage will represent a major milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
